Dr. Richard Pegnetter, Jr. was born in Pennsylvania to Alice Coryell and Richard Pegnetter Sr. and was the older of two brothers. He grew up in Reynoldsville, PA.
Richard began his lifetime academic career by attending the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Indiana – Pennsylvania and earned a doctorate at Cornell University. During his long career in higher education, Richard held administrative positions at several large universities, including the University of Iowa, Colorado State University and the University of Massachusetts. He took special pride in his association with Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL.
Richard joined FGCU in 1995 as Professor and Founding Dean of the Lutgert College of Business, bringing strong leadership to the development and management of the college’s many successful and innovative programs. In 2007 he was selected to serve as Interim University President and continued to strengthen relationships between FGCU and the community beyond campus during his tenure. After returning to his role as Dean and Professor, he retired in 2011 as an Emeritus Faculty member.
Richard was an avid sportsman and nature lover. His hobbies included canoeing, mountain hiking, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his two daughters, Rori Elizabeth Pegnetter of Bonita Springs, FL and Theresa Marie Smith of DuBois, PA.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother, Gene and his wife, Sherry Pegnetter of Murphy, NC; and his former wife, Georgia Thomas Pegnetter.
FGCU will hold a memorial service on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 5:00 PM to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Richard Pegnetter, founding Dean of the Lutgert College of Business and FGCU Interim President. The program will be in the Lutgert Hall Courtyard (or in the Lutgert Hall Lobby in case of rain) on the FGCU campus and everyone is invited to attend.
Members of Dr. Pegnetter’s family will be in attendance at this opportunity for the University community to pay tribute to his years as founding Dean of the Lutgert College of Business from 1995 to 2011, and as FGCU’s interim president in 2007, and to recognize his important legacy in the life of our institution. I hope you can join us for this special occasion.
